Les Miserables is a story of Jean Valjean, 24601, who has been
released from prison after 19 years
because he stole a loaf of bread for his starving sister & family. he was
refused by innkeepers thus he came to the house of Bishop of Digne, who treated
him graciously, but still the urge to steal the church’s silverware brought him
trouble, captured by policemen as presented to the priest for complaint, the
Bishop instead added the candlestick and commanded to release him and was asked
to live an honest life.
8 years after, Jean Valjean had a new identity as Monsieur
Madeleine, a wealthy factory owner and mayor of Montreuil-sur-Mer where
Fantine, one of his workers, had an illegitimate child named Cosette whom she
leaved with the Thenardier, which was discovered by another co-worker and was
dismissed from the factory. Here, Fantine sold her locket, her long hair and a
couple of her teeth and became a prostitute. She lamented on her broken dreams
and failed relationship. When she fought back against an abusive customer, the
Mayor helped her, orders Javert to free her and brought her to the hospital
where Valjean made a promised to raise her child and thereafter she died.
Valjean succeeded in saving Cosette who grew and fell inlove to
Marius and the feeling was mutual. However, Eponine, a daughter of Thenardier
fell secretly to Marius.
Paris was in upheaval when General Lamarque became ill and will
soon die. Students formed an underground group for a revolution headed by
Marius Pontmercy and Enjolras in ABC Café’ and the death of the General brought
these students to march on the streets.
Valjean planned to leave the place with Cosette but when he knew
that the young lovers genuine feelings with each other, he joined the troop to
save Marius from the war. There he saw Javert, a detainee, as he disguised
himself as one of the revolutionists but was discovered by Gavroche as government
spy, Valjean helped him escaped.
Students defy the police warning and Eponine was shot & first one to die
in Marius arms. Gavroche, the young & abandoned son of Thenardier was also
shot while gathering ammunition and the final warning headed to the death of
all the students. Marius was saved by Valjean moreover, Javert caught them but
allowed them to leave as he has to save the life of a man. Javert commited
suicide by throwing himself to the waters of Seine as he reflected on his behaviour
from right and wrong, and good and evil.
Cosette and Marius married but the day before the wedding Valjean
confesses to Marius his past life as an ex-convict and to have a peaceful life
for everyone, he has to leave. Marius visited the ABC café’ and recollected the
memories of his group and let this sad part of his life go. During the wedding,
the Thernardier came in disguise and revealed to Marius that Valjean was a
murderer as they witnessed a corpse he carried after the barricades fell. Marius saw the ring worn by the Thenardier and realized that Valjean saved
his life.
Valjean was almost dying when angel Fantine came as a spirit,
Cosette and Marius rushed to bid farewell and he died peacefully.
